Fireplace Designs Gone Wrong
By Jessica A

It turned out to be very difficult to settle on a fireplace design for my family's new home. Whereas my husband wanted a rugged fireplace, possibly made from brick, I wanted something with elegance and class. I could just picture what it would look like with my bows and greenery for the holidays.

It was after a lot of arguing, hair pulling, and a knocked-out tooth before we finally chose the design that was just right. Now, to avoid the same mistakes we made, here are some things you'll want to consider BEFORE you decide on a design.

Budget:

It's essential to know your budget for a fireplace, and then focus on all the fireplace designs that fit within your budget. The designs that we were looking at ended up being out of our budget, but we finally decided on something that we both loved and that we thought looked amazing. But staying within your budget should be your number one priority.

Placement:

Because of the way your house is built, it may not be able to accommodate certain fireplace designs. That hadn't occurred to us before we started our hunt for the perfect fireplace. Even though we saw a number of them that we really liked, it wasn't possible to use them. They weren't going to fit properly in the space we had decided the fireplace would go. While beauty is a big thing, you have to take the size and shape into consideration.

Use:

Do you want a real fireplace that you'll

actually use, or is it just for show? There are lots of different for-show fireplace designs for you to choose from if you want your fireplace to be purely decorational. On the other hand, if you're going to use it, then you need to think about the shape of it, the materials that are used, and of course fireplace safety.

You may get frustrated trying to choose the perfect design, but if you follow the tips above, it should be a cake walk!
